The prime goal of Accredited Exercise Physiologist (AEP or EP) services is to prevent or manage any chronic diseases via safe, effective and personalised exercise programs.
AEPs are university qualified allied health professionals who specialise in clinical exercise interventions for people with sub–acute or chronic medical conditions, injuries or disabilities. Pathology domains covered by the services of AEP’s include cardiovascular, metabolic, neurological, musculoskeletal, cancers, kidney, respiratory/pulmonary, mental health, and any other conditions which there is evidence that exercise can improve the client’s clinical status.
Accredited exercise physiologist V personal trainer?
To become an AEP, a practitioner is required to complete a minimum of a four-year undergraduate degree and undertake over 500-hour clinical placement. Therefore, an AEP is competent to provide exercise programs for a broad range of conditions whereas a personal trainer can only be allowed to offer services to apparently healthy population or focus on the improvement of general fitness level.

We recommend you make an appointment for an initial assessment with our exercise physiologist, Nilusha. Nilusha will spend 45-50 mins running through your medical history and understanding your needs and goals. From there she will prepare a program for you which could be clinic or home based.
If your program is home based, Nilusha will recommend you come for a return appointment within 1-2 weeks to ensure you are doing your exercises correctly, test if they are being affective and progress or regress the exercises where required. If the program is working well, he may then suggest you come back in a couple of months. If tweaking is still required, he may suggest a sooner appointment.
If your program is clinic based, Nilusha may recommend you come weekly for some one-on-one 50 min sessions or she may recommend small group EP classes (clinical exercise programs) or potentially a bit of both.
Do I need a referral?
No you don’t need a referral, you can simply book online or call reception to book your initial assessment. However, exercise physiologists are allied health professionals within Medicare Chronic Disease Management (CDM) plan. Therefore, you may be eligible to claim part of your EP services using your Medicare card. For a CDM plan, please discuss your conditions with your GP and obtain a medical referral which you can bring with you to your first appointment.
Can I claim any private health insurance rebate from an AEP consultation?
Yes, but it depends on the cover of your private health insurance. For instance, Medibank usually sets up a fixed rebate rate for one-on-one EP session while HCF is available for group EP services. To understand whether you are eligible or not, please contact your private health insurer.
